The third annual Stop Alzheimer’s Now Walk & Fundraising event in the Twin Cities shattered its initial $5,000 fundraising goal, making it a tremendous success for all those who participated and were involved in its organization. Led by North Star Senior Vice President Shaun McDuffee, the walk raised $13,620 (after initial donations were matched by the Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation). The walk occurred on Saturday, July 21, and had over 30 walkers participate, which began at Kelley Park in Apple Valley, Minnesota. The walk was followed by a reception at Panino Brothers (also in Apple Valley), where a fundraising event titled “Ales for Awareness” occurred that featured food and drink specials, raffle prizes, and a silent auction. Stop Alzheimer’s Now was founded by McDuffee in 2013, which is a non-profit organization committed to walking approximately 3,652 miles across each U.S. state with the purpose of raising both awareness and funds to find a cure for conditions like Alzheimer’s and Dementia. To date, McDuffee and a team of fellow North Star advisors, leaders, and team members have completed 14 walks, totaling over 900 miles in 15 U.S. states.
Stop Alzheimer’s Now aims to serve as a resource for individuals and family members affected by the disease, and have an ultimate goal of eradicating the illness by 2020. Stop Alzheimer’s Now shares stories from people affected by the disease, while providing opportunities for others to let their voices be heard through their website and social media accounts. Since being founded, the organization has raised over $310,000, of which $100,000 was respectively donated to the University of Florida College of Medicine and University of Kansas Medical Center. The third annual walk in the Twin Cities area has become the first recurring walk the organization has implemented. All funds raised were matched by the Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation, which has designated Alzheimer’s disease as one of the primary causes to which the organization contributes. Stay up to date with the organization and future walks by liking their Facebook page. 20,000 likes to the Facebook page will unlock a pledged $40,000 donation. Alzheimer's disease is a sickness that we should be aware of because the memory that we have will be lost and it is not pleasant to hear. All of those joyful moments that we have inside will disappear so let us always ensure that we love one another and let us express that love that we have inside. A love that is truly beautiful and one of a kind. I am eager to make a new promise to myself and that is to love other people around me.
